A ranking usually compares different buyers. This one compares one buyer against itself, because for the Italian market this month that is the more informative comparison: the six largest notices in the record all come from the same central purchasing body, differ only in volume, and share a deadline. Ranked together they show how a single procurement exercise is shaped.

READ OF THE MONTH

The volumes are the interesting column. The six tranches sit between 1,380 and 2,025 GWh — a spread of under fifty per cent between largest and smallest, which means these are not tiers designed to admit different sizes of supplier but six comparable blocks of the same commodity. A retailer capable of one is capable of all six, and the shared deadline of 31 July means the exercise rewards whoever can price and guarantee the whole set at once. Set against the €6.89B the same buyer has advertised since June, the electricity programme alone is a third of it. For the Italian market this month, the ranking of buyers and the ranking of lots inside one buyer are close to the same table.
