The Municipality of Bucharest has launched a significant tender for works along the Dâmbovița River, valued at nearly 64 million lei. The project involves the reconstruction of the Calicilor Bridge and the enhancement of riverbanks between Piaţa Unirii and Podul Izvor, with a deadline for bids set for 1 October.

Details of the Tender and Project Scope

The Municipality of Bucharest has announced a tender for approximately 63.96 million lei, excluding VAT, for the reconstruction of the Calicilor Bridge and the enhancement of the Dâmbovița riverbanks. The project is divided into two main objectives: first, the complete reconstruction of the Calicilor Bridge, which will connect Şelari Street and Sfinții Apostoli Street, near the Palace of Justice and the Domnița Bălașa Church. This bridge will measure 32 metres in length and 23 metres in width, featuring a metal frame, oak decking, and secure glass railings. Second, the enhancement of the riverbanks will cover an area of 11,000 square metres, including the installation of cantilevered pedestrian platforms suspended approximately 2 metres above the water.

Construction Timeline and Accessibility Features

The duration of the construction works is estimated at 18 months, with the deadline for submitting offers set for 1 October at 15:00. The project aims to improve accessibility and public space along the river. Features include a special viewing platform at Izvor, pedestrian crossings directly on the bridges, and the rehabilitation of existing infrastructure such as the pedestrian bridge and the river’s debarcader. The project also includes the reconfiguration of a 1.2-metre-wide bicycle lane, restoration of green spaces, and the installation of new urban furniture such as benches and bicycle racks. Modern LED public lighting will be installed, ensuring the entire area is accessible for individuals with disabilities.

Evaluation Criteria and Project Background

The tender will be awarded based on the best value for money criterion, which encourages competitive bidding among contractors. The project was previously stalled but was unlocked in April by the Mayor of Bucharest, Ciprian Ciucu, who signed the necessary construction authorisations. The mayor emphasised the importance of advancing beneficial elements of the Integrated Urban Development Plan (PIDU), highlighting the city’s commitment to enhancing public spaces and infrastructure. The reconstruction of the Calicilor Bridge and the improvement of the Dâmbovița riverbanks are expected to significantly enhance connectivity and recreational opportunities in the area.
