Onterris has been awarded a contract worth more than C$9 million to provide environmental services during construction of a major natural gas transmission project in Canada. The company said the award extends work it previously carried out during the project’s design and planning phases, with revenue expected through the end of 2027.

A construction-phase award

The contract was announced by Onterris, a global environmental solutions company, and awarded by a leading Canadian energy infrastructure company. It covers environmental services during construction of a C$3 billion natural gas transmission project, which is expected to deliver more than 1 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day once operational. The project is presented as an investment supporting energy demand, industrial expansion and long-term economic development in Canada. The announcement does not identify the buyer or describe the competition or tender process behind the award. It does, however, show a common procurement pattern for complex infrastructure: a specialist supplier remains involved as a project moves from design into construction and restoration.

Continuity across the project lifecycle

Onterris previously supported the project’s front-end engineering design and detailed engineering phases. That earlier work included planning, permitting support, field investigations and regulatory compliance services. The new award extends the company’s role into construction and interim reclamation, followed by final clean-up activities. For buyers, a lifecycle appointment can preserve knowledge of site conditions, approvals and mitigation commitments as responsibility passes between project stages. For bidders, experience gained during early planning can become relevant to later service requirements, although the release does not state that continuity was the sole reason for the award. Onterris said the contract reflects confidence in its technical expertise, integrated services and execution across the project lifecycle.

A broad environmental scope

The planned services cover environmental issues that can arise before, during and after construction. Onterris said its multidisciplinary work will include wildlife protection, aquatic habitat monitoring, nesting bird and migratory bird compliance, amphibian breeding wetland and relocation programmes, and wetland delineation and protection. The scope also includes vegetation, soils, contamination response, invasive species management, biosecurity protocols, regulatory compliance and GIS-enabled spatial data management. This range illustrates how environmental procurement can combine field operations, specialist assessment and evidence for regulators within one service package. It also places coordination at the centre of delivery, because ecological protections and reporting obligations must be managed alongside construction activity.

Digital reporting during construction

A stated feature of the award is Onterris’s integrated digital management platform. The company said it will use enterprise GIS technologies, cloud-based field data collection, interactive dashboards, automated reporting workflows and real-time spatial data management. These tools are intended to give the client and project stakeholders timely environmental information during construction, while improving field coordination, regulatory reporting and quality assurance. In procurement terms, the technology is part of the proposed service model rather than a separate product described in the announcement. The award therefore combines personnel and environmental expertise with data management intended to support decisions, track conditions and organise compliance information across a large infrastructure project.

This award reflects the strength of our client relationships and demonstrates the value of partnering throughout the permitting, construction, and interim reclamation phases of critical infrastructure projects.

WHY IT MATTERS

The award shows how environmental services can be procured across multiple infrastructure phases rather than as a single construction-stage task. A contract may combine permitting support, ecological monitoring, compliance evidence, digital field records and reclamation, making technical scope and continuity important features for both buyers and competing suppliers.
