Construction is under way on lot 1D Joseni–Ditrău of Romania’s A8 motorway, where the reported site mobilisation includes more than 300 people and 245 machines and pieces of equipment. The 14.4-kilometre section is being delivered by the association of Danlin XXL, Intertranscom Impex and Groma Hold.

A large site operation on the A8’s mountain section

The Joseni–Ditrău lot is the first motorway lot under construction in Harghita county, according to the site update published for the first part of October. More than 300 people and 245 machines and pieces of equipment are working on the section. The works form part of the mountain section of the A8, planned to connect the area around Miercurea Nirajului with Leghin. The wider motorway is intended to link Moldova and Transylvania and connect both regions with the European transport network. The scale of the reported mobilisation provides a snapshot of activity on one section of a wider strategic road connection.

One contract covers design before execution

The 14.4-kilometre lot is being built by the association of Danlin XXL, Intertranscom Impex and Groma Hold. Its contract lasts 34 months, divided into 10 months for design and 24 months for execution. That structure illustrates a procurement mechanism relevant to major public works: the same contracted delivery arrangement includes a design period followed by a construction period, rather than reporting the two phases as unrelated projects. For bidders and public authorities, the distinction matters because progress on site belongs to the execution phase, while the earlier design period is part of the same contractual timetable.

Bridges, wildlife crossings and the Joseni interchange

Current work includes ground stabilisation, earthworks, bridges and grade-separated structures, as well as the Joseni road interchange and components of the intelligent transport system. The route is planned to contain 18 bridges, passages and viaducts, together with three ecoducts for wildlife and one interchange at Joseni. Reported activity includes drilling and concreting piles for bridges over Pârâul Alb and the Mureș river, work on the bridge over Pârâul Pietrosul and interventions on structures along the route. At the Joseni interchange, work is also under way on the passage intended for fauna.

A temporary connection is part of the scheme

The project also includes a temporary discharge that will allow a connection with lot 2A Ditrău–Grințieș. This is a practical interface between adjacent motorway contracts: the usefulness of one section can depend on how it connects with the next section, even while the wider route remains under construction. The reported works therefore cover both standalone structures on the Joseni–Ditrău lot and elements needed to support its future relationship with the neighbouring lot. The source reports construction progress and mobilisation, but gives no completion date beyond the contract’s overall 34-month duration.

WHY IT MATTERS

The project shows how a major public road contract can combine design and construction within one timetable, while its delivery also depends on interfaces with neighbouring lots. The A8’s Joseni–Ditrău section includes substantial structures, wildlife crossings, an interchange and intelligent transport components, making coordination central to the works.
